My Job as a History Teacher on a Training Programme

“After over 100 job applications and no job I needed help!”

Hear from Michaela who had a job offer rescinded due to the pandemic and needed a second opinion on her job hunting strategy.

I graduated in History and Archaeology from the University of Hull in the summer 2020. I wanted a career in teaching and had applied to TeachFirst and received a job offer however due to the pandemic it was rescinded. Despite this setback I decided to continue making over 100 applications for grad schemes and temp roles with little success. I needed to get a second opinion on my strategy and so booked a free mentoring session with Ben who specialised in the Education sector. He was extremely helpful and helped me think in different ways and encouraged me to apply for teacher training courses with schooldirect. I applied through UCAS and sent a personal statement which he helped me with. I was then called for interview where I had to prepare a one hour lesson plan and 20 minute rationale. After that there was a 20 min Q&A and I was delighted to receive an outstanding result – and a job! I am now a History teacher with the East Teaching Alliance on a one year training programme.
