With a career background spanning commercial legal practice, teaching and researching in academia and most recently working in a governmental role, I have insight into a variety of careers, roles and sectors, and a good understanding of how we travel and change through our working lives. I now want to share that experience to help recent graduates to start out confidently and successfully on their career journey.

I want to be the mentor that I never had.

I’m easy to get on with and I have built up lots of mentoring experience from my many years supporting students 1:1 in Higher Education.

I initially studied politics and sociology as an undergraduate but then switched to law. My career journey – in summary – has been:

1990 – 2007 solicitor in private practice acting for large companies and public bodies in environmental law matters.

2007 – 2024 lecturer then Associate Professor at Sheffield Hallam University teaching law to construction, real estate and environmental management students. I ran courses and managed a staff group. I was research active and gained a PhD. I also successfully supervised PhD students.

In 2025 I worked for the Department for Education as an Independent Assessor of appeals and complaints against the Student Loan Company.

I’m now acting as a volunteer mentor for various universities and charities, and really enjoying it.

I also remain connected to academia as an Honorary Fellow and as editor of an academic journal. I continue to write and publish in the interdisciplinary field of legal geography.
