50% of UK employers claim that graduates are unprepared for entering the workforce (Source: BBC).
The Institute of Student Employers report 43% of employers rated self-awareness as lower than expected, 37% rated resilience as lower than expected and 26% reported that work-appropriate written communication skills were lacking.

- Skills gap. Only 17% of Humanities graduates felt very well prepared for work (Source: DLHE). Non-vocational degrees emphasise theoretical knowledge over practical application meaning many graduates lack specific technical skills, software proficiency or hands-on experience.
- Limited or no work experience. Especially during the pandemic, it was extremely difficult for graduates to gain real-world internships, work experience or placements.
- 2:2 or 3rd class degree graduates and those from less prestigious Universities may face challenges in demonstrating their qualifications to employers who prioritise Russell Group and 2.1 or above graduates.
- Mental health. The transition from structured academic environments to more ambiguous professional settings can be intimidating for those who are neurodiverse or other mental health challenges.
- Career uncertainty. Many graduates are unsure about the career paths they want to follow. They may not fully understand the wide range of opportunities available with their degree.
- Lack of soft skills. Communication, problem-solving, teamwork, leadership, emotional intelligence, resilience, adaptability and networking are not explicitly taught at University.
- Visa and work permit barriers, language proficiency and cultural adjustments make entering the workplace even more challenging for international graduates.
- Discrimination, bias and stereotypes facing BAME, female, disabled and LGBTQ+ graduates is challenging, particularly if entering less diverse fields such as law, technology, engineering and finance.
- Socioeconomic background. Graduates from deprived areas can have fewer opportunities and access to professional networks.
